I finished my first semester of medical school yesterday with two final exams in Nutrition and Histology. My excitement was immediately followed by the arrival of our first winter blizzard, covering us with about a foot of snow. My flights to see family were cancelled, and instead of flying home, my husband and I spent the evening with my new medical school classmate-friends.
School doesn’t allow us a chance to socialize much beyond discussing the courses and professors. And the group of people that I sit with does not go to bars every weekend. So last night was a nice break from the usual conversations. I enjoyed learning more about people, and seeing everybody relax a little bit.
The semester has gone by so fast, and yet we’ve done so much… Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Epidemiology, Interviewing, Cell Biology, Immunology, Histology, Problem-Based Learning, and Nutrition. Everyone of course is anxious for Anatomy, Physical Diagnoses, and Physiology next semester, and the hands-on learning that will accompany those classes. It’s strange to think that we’re already 1/8th M.D., and 1/4th done with our classroom years. I don’t feel like I know anything that makes me anything like a doctor yet.
